Our organization plays a multifaceted role in honoring and supporting veterans in Madison County. Throughout the year, we meticulously vet and select inductees for the Hall of Heroes, culminating in the organization of the annual Hall of Heroes ceremonies. Moreover, our ongoing efforts include researching and recognizing past military members awarded valor medals dating back to 1808, highlighting their contributions on our commission website.
One of our key responsibilities is the maintenance of the Military Heritage Displays housed within the Madison County Courthouse. This collection comprises the Hall of Heroes display, the Purple Heart display, the Killed in Action (KIA) display, and the "All Branches Military Medals and Ribbons" display, showcasing the valor and sacrifices of our veterans.
In 2014, we launched the Price of Freedom Project, a 50-minute historical program aimed at educating high school students about the sacrifices and courage of our heroes, ultimately fostering appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy. This interactive panel discussion involves past Hall of Heroes inductees sharing their military experiences, providing students with firsthand insights.
During Madison County's Veterans Week celebration, our organization hosts the Hall of Heroes Ceremony, publicly recognizing and honoring Madison County veterans who have received valor awards. This ceremony, along with our Hall of Heroes program during the AUSA Veterans dinner, serves as a focal point of Veterans Week.
Throughout the year, we review and select applicants for induction by examining military documentation and conducting personal interviews. Prior to Veterans Week, inductees and their guests attend a buffet dinner where they are acquainted with fellow veterans and briefed on ceremonial procedures. During the ceremony, inductees are formally introduced, their citations read aloud, and they are presented with Challenge Coins by military and government dignitaries. On the day of the parade, inductees and their guests are invited to a ceremonial breakfast and offered a ride in the Madison County Military Heritage Commission Hall of Heroes trolley provided by the city of Huntsville.
